Shakespeare back in the Gardens

After a two-year hiatus caused by Covid the touring company Shakespeare in the Squares came storming back with a sell-out performance of The Tempest in Formosa Garden on Friday July 1st. With its opening scene of a shipwreck I was surprised to discover that the play is listed as the first of the Bard’s comedies, but the small but versatile ensemble brought out the humour & added a jaunty musical dimension with every member of cast taking a turn on a variety of instruments. Who knew that Shakespeare was the original composer of that Desert Island Disc classic A Sleepy Lagoon?? Anyway it was all done with great panache (under happily rain-free skies) to the audible delight of the 250-strong audience.
